Progress

Brock has made some unbelievable progress over the last month. I obviously have no frame of reference for what his recovery should look like when making that statement, but I feel like anyone who has experience with paralyzed dogs would agree using the word unbelievable is a fair assessment. His desire to get better is what’s surprised me most. He doesn’t feel sorry for himself or wallow in self-pity. His brain knows he has more than two paws and is actively trying to use them. His resiliency is such encouragement for me. It’s hard to feel sorry for myself or how this has effected my life when he grabs a toy to play.
He’s starting to do some things I wasn’t sure he ever would. If he’s laying on his right leg he can push off with enough strength to stand and take a step or three. He useing his right hind leg in unison with his front more often. Stairs aren’t much of an issue and he can pull himself up into the car without help. I just have to steady his back half.

He knows he’s pooping now too, which gives me hope that he can potentially regain control. It’s actually pretty funny to watch him scurry away as it’s happening. It’s like he knows how gross dealing with poop is and he wants to be as far away as possible. Dealing with poop is gross, especially at 3am when the smell smacks you awake and your foot finds the pile. The good news is that I don’t need to worry about him rolling around and smearing it all over the house if I’m not there. The bad news is I still have to clean it up.

I’ve been taking him to Four Paws Rehab twice a week and he loves it. Brock is a ladies man for sure and can’t wait for his appointments. They have started using electro stimulation on his left leg and are seeing positive results. He seems to be aware that something’s going on back there.

I’m really trying to manage my own expectations of his recovery without setting limitations on it. He’s come a long way in just four weeks and hopefully he’ll continue on this upward path. As much as I want to see him be immediately better it’s also really cool to see the incremental steps he’s taking.
